Indian benchmark indices ended higher in the volatile session on August 6, with the Nifty closing above the 24,600 mark, supported by strong buying in PSU bank stocks. However, gains were capped by weakness in the metal, media and realty sectors.
At close, the Sensex was up 373.76 points or 0.48 percent at 78,954.76, and the Nifty was up 11.35 points or 0.05 percent at 24,636. About 2023 shares advanced, 2058 shares declined, and 200 shares unchanged.
The Nifty Midcap 100 index declined 0.4%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index rose 0.5%, reflecting mixed trends in the broader market.
Nifty gainers were Reliance Industries, SBI, Bharat Electronics, Eternal, Titan Company, while losers included Power Grid Corp, Tata Steel, TCS , JSW Steel and Bajaj Auto.
Sectorally, Nifty PSU Bank emerged as the top gainer, rising 2.2%, followed by Nifty Oil & Gas, which advanced 0.8%. On the downside, Nifty Media was the worst performer, falling 1.3%, while Nifty Realty declined 1.3%. Nifty Auto and Nifty Metal also ended lower, shedding 1% each, respectively, while Nifty IT slipped 0.9%.
Nearly 200 stocks touched 52-week high including Navin Fluorine, Neuland Lab, Tata Tech, AU Small Finance, PNB Housing, Welspun Corp, Tata Capital, Craftsman, Shriram Finance, Pidilite Industries, Aegis Logistics, Sai Life Sciences, Titan Company, among others.
