US stock futures mixed
Apr 16 2024 5:19PM
U.S. stock index futures traded in a mixed fashion Tuesday, with investors digesting elevated geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, rising bond yields as well as the ongoing quarterly earnings season.

At 06:40 ET (10:40 GMT), Dow Jones Futures gained 120 points, or 0.3%, while S&P 500 Futures dropped 5 points, or 0.1%, and Nasdaq 100 Futures fell 20 points, or 0.1%.

The main Wall Street indexes clocked steep losses on Monday, extending a decline from the prior week as a slew of negative signals saw investors continue to lock-in profits from a strong first-quarter rally.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell almost 250 points, or 0.7%, erasing most of its gains this year, S&P 500 fell 1.2%, while the NASDAQ Composite closed down 1.8%.

Weighing heavily has been the rise in bond yields, after hotter-than-expected U.S. retail sales data showed that consumer spending remained strong. This is expected to underpin inflation in the coming months, and keep the Federal Reserve from cutting interest rates too soon.

Also hitting sentiment has been the instability in the Middle East, with Israel seen preparing retaliation for a large-scale missile and drone strike by Iran over the weekend. While Iran’s attack had done little damage, it raised the possibility of a wider war in the Middle East, keeping traders largely biased towards safe haven assets such as the U.S. dollar and gold.
