US President Donald Trump warned of catastrophic consequences for Iran following US and Israeli strikes on Kharg Island, saying the escalation could mark a decisive turning point while also hinting at the possibility of regime change in Tehran.
The fresh warning comes as his 48-hour ultimatum to Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz nears end. He had threatened to target Iranian infrastructure unless Tehran agreed a deal to end the war on Tuesday, saying he was "considering blowing everything up and taking over the oil."
“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,” he wrote on Truth Social, signalling the scale of destruction expected from the strikes.
Trump also suggested the attacks could pave the way for political transformation in Iran. “However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen,” he said.
Calling it “one of the most important moments” in global history, Trump added that “47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end.”
Trump's remarks came as US-Israeli strikes hit the key Iranian oil export terminal of Kharg Island, which is considered the economic lifeline of Iran.
"The American-Zionist enemy has carried out several attacks on Kharg island, and several explosions have been heard there," Iran's Mehr news agency reported. The strikes reportedly hit a radar station, dock facilities and multiple military sites.
