Nifty 50 sinks to 52-week low

Indian equity indices ended lower for the second consecutive session on October 8, with the Nifty falling below 22,200 intraday to hit a fresh 52-week low amid broad-based selling, led by IT stocks.

Tracking weak global cues, the benchmarks opened lower and extended losses through the session as investors remained cautious amid elevated crude oil prices. Brent crude traded around $104 a barrel on persistent concerns over supply disruptions in the Middle East.

At close, the Sensex was down 1,045.46 points or 1.44 percent at 71,593.24, and the Nifty was down 371.25 points or 1.64 percent at 22,231.80.

Broader indices underperformed the main indices with Nifty midcap and smallcap indices falling more than 2 percent each.

Over the past two sessions, the total market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies declined by more than Rs 12 lakh crore to Rs 460.97 lakh crore.

On an intraday basis, the Nifty broke below its previous 52-week low of 22,182.55, hitting a fresh low of 22,179.90.

Biggest Nifty losers were Adani Enterprises, JSW Steel, Max Healthcare, ITC and Interglobe Aviation, while gainers included Infosys, Axis Bank and Tech Mahindra.

All sectoral indices ended in the red with Auto, Energy, FMCG, Infra, Media, Metal, Oil & Gas, Pharma, Realty down 2-3%.

More than 300 stocks touched 52-week low, including Inox Wind, NCC, Intellect Design Arena, Suzlon Energy, Max Healthcare, SJVN, Vedanta Aluminium, PI Industries, Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers, Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation, Swan Corp, Godfrey Phillips India, Aditya Birla Real Estate, Godawari Power & Ispat, Rail Vikas Nigam, Bharat Dynamics, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Chambal Fertilisers & Chemicals, Indian Oil Corporation and Muthoot Finance., among others.

The Indian rupee ended marginally lower for the third consecutive session at 96.78 per dollar, compared with the previous close of 96.77.
