Sensex gains 331 pts, Nifty climbs above 24,150

In yet another volatile session on August 28, Indian equity indices ended higher, snapping a two-day losing streak, with the Nifty managing to close above 24,150, led by gains in Information Technology stocks.


Amid positive global cues, the market opened higher and touched an intraday high of 24,188.30. However, profit booking during the mid-session pared some gains, although buying in IT, metal and pharma stocks helped the benchmarks remain in positive territory at the close.

The broader market underperformed the benchmark indices, with Nifty midcap and smallcap indices ended with little change.

Biggest Nifty gainers were TCS, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Wipro, HCL Technologies, while losers included Asian Paints, Shriram Finance, ITC, ICICI Bank and UltraTech Cement.

Mixed trend seen on the sectoral front, with IT index rose 3.5%, pharma, metal, media indices up 0.4% each. On the other hand, consumer durable, FMCG down 0.4% each.

More than 160 stocks touched 52-week high including Redington, Oracle Fin Services, Bajaj Auto, HFCL, Divis Labs, Piramal Finance, Aether Industries, Sai Life Sciences, Solar Industries, Bosch, Laurus Labs, Welspun Living, Welspun Corp, among others.

Among individual stocks, shares of Wipro rose 2% on partnership with Google Cloud, shares of RPP Infra shed 5% after Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu has terminated a work order worth Rs 205.89 crore.

Just Dial share price surged 10% after Kotak Institutional Equities retained its ‘Buy’ rating with a target price of Rs 1,175 and Tejas Networks share price advanced 7% following company received LoI from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

Chemplast Sanmar share price added 2% after MCA approved appointment of MD and ACME Solar Holdings shares added 1.5% on LOA from Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). Solara Active Pharma Sciences share price added 2% on tax demand rectification order from tax department.

Indian rupee ended 16 paise higher at Rs 95.38 per dollar on Friday, compared with previous close of Rs 95.54.
