Sensex settles 500 pts lower from day's high

Market failed to build on the previous day’s gains and ended lower on the first day of the September F&O series in a rangebound session on August 26, with the Nifty settling around the 24,200 mark.


Indian benchmark indices opened flat and gained momentum as the session progressed, but afternoon selling erased the intraday gains, with the Nifty closing at day’s low.

At close, the Sensex was down 183.15 points or 0.24 percent at 77,472.94, and the Nifty was down 126.80 points or 0.52 percent percent at 24,207.75.

The broader market outperformed the benchmark indices, with the Nifty Midcap ended marginally lower, while smallcap index gaining 0.8 percent.

Biggest Nifty gainers were Kotak Mahindra Bank, UltraTech Cement, Axis Bank, HDFC Life, JSW Steel, while losers included Infosys, Power Grid Corp, Bharti Airtel, Tech Mahindra and Shriram Finance.

Among sectors, metal and private bank indices rose 1% each, and PSU Bank index added 0.7%. On the other hand, IT and Infra indices shed 1% each, auto, consumer durables, Energy, FMCG, oil & gas, realty down 0.5-0.9%.

More than 140 stocks touched 52-week high including Anthem Biosciences, Divis Labs, Oracle Fin Services, Laurus Labs, PNB Housing Finance, TVS Motor, Ipca Labs, One 97 Communications (Paytm), Vodafone Idea, AU Small Finance Bank, United Spirits, among others.

Among individual stocks, DCB Bank shares rose 3.6% on reports of a potential capital infusion from private equity firms, while Advait Energy Transitions gained 3.3% after securing a ?134.63 crore contract from Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company (MPPTCL).

Hindustan Copper added 4% after the government decided to exercise the oversubscription option for 2.90 crore equity shares, while Billionbrains Garage Ventures slipped more than 3% after 12.5 crore shares changed hands in a block deal.

PhysicsWallah gained 4% after 1.6% equity changed hands, Rubicon Research rose nearly 6% after 7.85% equity traded in a block deal and shares of Ceigall India added 4.5% on emerging L-1 bidder for order worth Rs 609 crore from REC Power.
